Type samples from Sumatra

The Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) is preparing type samples from three origins on the island of Sumatra.

These are Gayo, Sidikilang, and Lintong. Gayo is at the northern tip of Sumatra, while Sidikilang and Lintong border Lake Toba, closer to the port of Medan. Lintong is a famous trade name for Arabica coffee from the southern end of Lake Toba. Sidikilang is on the northwest end of the lake and is less well known as a separate origin.

Mandheling is another famous trade name for Sumatran coffee. Some exporters use this term for the Lake Toba area as a whole, while others include Gayo as well.

All the type samples were processed using the giling basah (wet hulled) method. SCAI purchased 10 kg samples from 10 village level collectors in each of the three areas, between December and March. The locations of the collectors were recorded with GPS. These samples were then sorted to SCAA specialty grade and cupped. One or two samples from each area were eliminated for poor flavor or lack of uniformity. The remaining samples have been blended together into a sample representing the origin.

SCAI will send these samples out to interested importers and roasters on a first come, first served basis, starting in May. You can get the three blends, or all the individual samples, depending on your interest.

The samples will be accompanied by digital maps (Arc View and Map Windows) of all Indonesian Arabica origins (with the GPS purchase points), as well as other information, such as contacts for exporters who can supply coffee from each origin.

We will ask interested companies to pay the shipping and handling costs, so that this exercise can continue for Indonesia’s eastern origins later this year.

If you are interested, please send an e-mail to info@sca-indo.org with “Type samples” in the subject line. If you would like to see the first draft of the maps, visit us at SCAA (Booth 543).
