iPhone cupping software - iCupper Master Assistant

Postby Marty G Curtis on Thu Apr 30, 2009 7:45 pm

Well here it is for an IPHONE go to the app store and search icupper and give it a try. The format is for SCAA cupping form.
This is another approach for the cupping form using the latest technology.
We will be following it up with couple other programs that this will be part all modular.

Re: port-o-lab by Coffee Lab International - Has anyone used it?

Postby Piero Cristiani on Thu Apr 30, 2009 9:37 pm

@Marty

As soon as you posted the name I googled it and download it.

The app looks good overall, even though I haven't messed around with it to much yet. The only odd thing that stands out at the moment is that the scoring goes from 6-10 (for some odd reason) instead of 1-10 (per SCAA standards). Any ideas on this?

Also, I installed Formviewer in my computer but I'm unable to execute it. It spits out an error.

Marty, are you part of the development team?

I'd be more than happy to help with reporting bugs and such.

Yes I have been part of the development team. We have a team of developers so to get the best answer I would go here info@liviotechnologies.com and they will response. Plus we will start FAQ form after a short time for issues. Also we will have spot for your ideals of improvement also.

info@liviotechnologies.com

Thanks

PS: (scoring goes from 6-10 (for some odd reason) instead of 1-10 (per SCAA standards). Any ideas on this?)
The SCAA cupping form that is approved is 6-10 as we are cupping specialty coffees. If I remember correctly it has a date in the lower right corner of the form dated June 2003. This is also the form that we are using to teach the SCAA Cupping Judge Course and Q-Grader course in Rose Bud, AR.
Thanks for the question.

The form goes from 6-10 for ease of use, specialty coffee should not be scoring less than a 6 in any category, however the actual process scores from 1-10 and you can (and often do) score a coffee that warrants a score lower than a 6 and you should be able to give it that score even though it doesn't 'apprear' on the scale on the form.

On the paper form you are correct you can write any number you like 0-10 but we design this to match the SCAA cupping form so that it could be use in place of the paper form. If you scored all the attributes 6 and check boxes 10 you will end up with a score of 72 which is far below specialty coffee. But if enough people feel that we need to score coffee off the scale we will look into a means to do that as it stands you would note in the notes section as you probably are buying that coffee any way. Thanks for your comments

I cannot seem to use the app stand alone, it prompts me to go to the action screen and there is a login of some sort there?

@Alistair

I've noticed this as well. I'm thinking that to use the program you have to login with a user/pass and have internet connection on your iPhone/Touch. I haven't been able to install the Formviewer and I'm thinking the Formviewer will let you register in the system to get a user/pass.

Have you been able to install Formviewer?

Livio iCupper Master Assistant is an Apple® iPhone™ and iPod® touch wireless application that allows the cupper/judge to electronically score each bean parameter

Marty,

This looks like a great app, however it is not compatable with the ITouch. I downloaded it to ITunes and it would not load onto my itouch, then I tried to download it directly to the itouch and the message indicated it was for iphones only. Do you know if this is something that will be addressed in a later version?

I'm in a zone where At&T reception is for shit and would love to see this available for an itouch.

David - You should have received a direct reply with a link to resolve your situation

Pietro - Please send specific information such as operating system (windows xp, 2003, etc), browser type and version and any screen captures showing your situation and we will look into it promptly. Please use info@LivioTechnologies.com so we can deal with your unique situation.

Just a couple of comments on system requirements....

The iPod/iPhone must be a 2nd generation model.

On the iCMA Viewer, this installation is for Windows based platforms only. We have talked with a couple of customers who are Macs and we are looking into new ways for everyone to benefit from this technology.

And, we realize there is some confusion with setting up the "pairing" of the iPhone/iPod and the iCMA Viewer. Please follow this link for complete setup instructions http://www.liviotechnologies.com/Content/LivioiCMA.pdf. Again, if you have any problems setting this up, contact us at info@LivioTechnologies.com

Feel free to offer any suggestions or ways we can improve our products.

Regards - Terry

i have managed to get the app working on my iphone but not the viewer on my MAC. It'd be great if this could be a feature in the future... otherwise I'll have to pair it with a different computer :-)

Can't wait to test it out!

ok, finally got form viewer working on my pc (i am generally mac person). you must (apparently) install the most recent v 3.5 (sp1) microsoft .net package to get things working. i did the final install on mozilla/firefox and it was fine.

this is the link they gave me to get the .net resolved:
http://www.liviotechnologies.com/Public/iCMA/Express/iCMAFormViewerSetup.msi

it requires a reboot.

then, read this and follow it from registration, through email verification, then user id, pairing with iphone, etc., and you should be fine. if someone wants to send me a pre-populated judging (i assume this is possible, marty?), please do so; i would like to load it onto my formviewer-- so we can test the flexibility of the app. hopefully we can swap info without too much trouble.

this is the .pdf for setup:

it needs a way to change the order in how you score.

right now you can ONLY score each attribute for eve4ry coffee in a row.
so for ten samples you have to score each one on flavor then score each one on acidity etc.

you CAN save after each coffee and go back to start and do it that way but it is so confusing as to be near impossible. I liked the overall format and useability but wish you cold decide to EITHER score each coffee across the row or score each attribute for each coffee.

but again overall I liked it.

Dave
We have a way but have not release as we want to come up with a way that once it is sent by someone it can not be changed at the other end. We are also watching to see what the end user thinks would make it better. So when we deploy an updated version we give the end user what they want and not just what we think you want. You have to remember that this also ties into the our programs we offer which makes it more robust. Some examples would be cupping score tied back to the roast profile. You will be able to see every time you cupped the coffee to compare your scores.

Please keep the ideals following and we will see what we can do.

a few ideas:
it needs a way to name the coffees. blind cupping is great but then when you upload it you should be able to name them. otherwise HOW CAN YOU KNOW WHICH coffee is which a few days later?

and there is no way to choose which printer to print to. we have quite a few printers on the network and not being able to choose means the one that is not working ow is the only one to print to aside from changing default printer.

the notes do not print in the group print mode only individual mode. make it so that the flavor notes print on the multi coffee print out.

Barefoot - We built it for blind cupping but realize there must be an option to name the sessions and samples if used in a day-to-day production mode.

Good catch on the printers, we will add that to our list.

On the notes, the problem is the SCAA form doesn't really give options on how to expand the form if the notes become more than the space allowed. So we opted for placing them at the bottom one session at the time. If this could be addressed by the SCAA as a way to show less samples and allow the notes are to expand, we could easily incorporate them. Again, we have focused mainly on adhering to the current SCAA standards first, then expanding later on the day-to-day use.

Keep providing suggestions as we are listening and working on enhancing this application as well as our other applications.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Re: iPhone cupping software - iCupper Master Assistant

Postby luca on Sat Jun 27, 2009 4:35 am

Hi Marty and Terry,

I have just gotten a new iPhone and am in the process of getting this up and running. I have some quick questions:

(a) Data access and ownership - Am I right in thinking that this uploads all data to somewhereorother online? Is it possible to keep a hard copy saved? Who else has access to my data? Is it confidential? Do I retain copyright in my cupping notes? Can I instead, say, output it to a csv file or something?

(b) Subscription and fees - Looks like when you sign up you only get a month's access. Is subscription going to be a service for which a fee is charged? If so, how much will the subscription cost? What would the subscription get me? What happens to my data if I elect not to subscribe - can I download it and remove it from the server?

Sorry if I've missed the answers to these questions!

Cheers,

Luca
