Particle size/consistency analysis tool?

Postby sutono on Sat Aug 29, 2009 1:01 pm

In calibrating drip grinders, we typically use grind samples for size and consistency matching. Is there a tool on the market that analyzes grind size and consistency to better dial in drip grinders and to detect dull burrs?

They're way out of my price range, but a good tool for measuring particle size and distribution is a set of sieves and a sieve shaker. Basically, it's a series of calibrated screens that can be vibrated and shaken in a methodical way which sorts out grinds according to size.

Here are a couple of sites that sell them:

The sieves aren't horribly expensive but the shakers are and it's totally impractical to shake manually. I've given thought to picking up a used paper shaker and see if it could be adapted. The paper shakers will take a ream of paper and shake it until the corners and edges all in a nice neat stack. At the SCAA conference I attended in 2008 the guy from Modern Process Equipment did a good session on grind particle distribution and its relationship to drip coffee quality and characteristics. It was very enlightening and if you are SCAA member should probably still be available from them as a download.
