We pay for an organic waste company to pickup all our coffee grinds and food scraps, but this is way cooler.

I should really give growing mushrooms for our own kitchen a shot, but we already have a dedicated use: we actually sell all of our grounds to a local arborist who has been doing research with U Florida on the use of spent coffee grounds to control the spread of Asian cycad scale in Sago palm trees. Scale is an insect that has was introduced to Florida in 1996 and has killed 80% of the Sago palms in South Florida. There are very costly and invasive chemical pesticide treatments for the scale, but it turns out that a consistently replenished composting bed of fresh grounds is just as effective in repelling the bugs and saving the trees.
