Starbucks to sell flavored coffee

Wishing this news had been released on April 1, but no such luck.

I assure you- thinking "I told you so" will be sufficient.

No really? I don't know why but I did not think it would ever go so low.

Isn't flavored coffee dead? I don't know where you can even buy it anymore?

It should be dead, but Starbucks twist is that they are "infusing" rather than dowsing/spraying and only selling it ground. Which IMO is good, I can't imagine trying to remove the smell of flavored coffee from the grinder once we a get sick of the taste and want to go back to quality coffee.

Once you leave either coast you will quickly discover flavored coffee is alive and well in every Krogers and WalMart. The "heartland" loves to curl up with some snickerdoodle and watch Glenn Beck.

Starbucks simultaneously gets it... and doesn't get it.

This blog is written by a former Starbucks marketer, a guy whose job was to develop and guard the brand. It's as clear to him as everyone here what just happened.

I don't think this guy gets it at all... hatin' on fried pork rinds... c'mon.

Seriously though, it doesn't take a genius to understand that roasting "coffee darker than most" isn't actually bringing out more "natural flavors".

And why is anyone really surprised about this? This is the next logical step from instant VIA, and simply another way for the good guys to distinguish themselves from the has-beens. I say keep it up, Starbucks.

To add a little perspective to his comment, Starbucks doesn't feel their most serious competition is with the folks on this board.

These days, they spend much more time worrying about McD and DD than Intelly and Stumptown (though they're at least aware of you now). Back when this marketer worked at Starbucks, the primary competition was light-roast-minimize-moisture-loss-can-coffee and maybe a few cheesy copycats, so his statement is true enough, though dated by today's standards.

To be honest Starbucks has sold flavor coffee before, it was sold under the brand name of Caravalli Coffee which was subsidiary, later sold off in Sept or Oct 1987
Also for your info they had a brand named Blue Anchor and this was sold to what was changed to Milestone Coffee.

I'm really not sure why anyone would be surprised by SBux doin this. They are in the market to sell coffee to folks that love the 32oz white chocolate mocha.
Should we hate on'em for following their customer's desires?
Do bar b q folks get pissed when McDonals brings back the McRib?

The reason I am disappointed (but never surprised, because I get that they are all about the commerce and stock price before all else) is simple. They have access to and in most cases use decent to good quality beans for some of their blends and many of their SO offerings. If they had the guts and good sense to get rid of of the "signature dark roast" with its distinct burnt tones, and used their bully pulpit to tout the value of tasting the coffee flavors rather than the roast flavors - it could be hugely beneficial to good independents.

Many of the mass market coffee consumers who favor the flavored coffees do it because they have never4 tasted good and/or properly roasted coffee. I'm being rather idealistic... thinking that Starbucks might ever use their marketing clout to elevate the mainstream palate and thereby open more people's minds and wallets to buying and drinking better coffee from independents... but it doesn't hurt to dream.
