Twittering at the 2009 SCAA Expo

Postby Piero Cristiani on Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:50 pm

Who twitters?

Post up your user names as I'd like to follow the industry in general as well as know what's going on at the expo while I'm in Atlanta.

Also, adding hashtags to your tweets is a cool way to know what's going on at the SCAA. I'd propose using #SCAA2009 for anything that will be happening that weekend and #WBC2009 accordingly.

I can expand more on what hashtags are later. Have to finish some stuff at the moment.

I would recommend shortening the hashtag ID's to #SCAA and #WBC to save the extra characters.

Planning to tweet in ATL as well.

Looks like there is already a "WBC" in use -- presumably for the World Baseball Classic. Does it create a conflict to use the same tag for separate events? Could be confusing... perhaps we should stick to SCAA. Tried to search for SCAA on hashtags.org, but the server is down right now -- will check again later.

I don't believe it would cause any conflicts as far as the hash system goes. The only problem I could see happening would be if someone is still twittering about the Baseball Championship the tweets would get intertwined with the WBC ones.

#SCAA for the expo would be fine with me. It would be nice if we could keep WBC and SCAA separate though. #WBC09 perhaps? #WBCATL ? #SCAA-WBC (a bit long per twitter standards)?

And yeah, the hashtags website is really bad. It stalls, spits out errors, doesn't search, etc.

Also, if you want to monitor key words (this includes hashtags as well) you can use http://monitter.com and type SCAA as a keyword.

Cheers-- Looking forward!

I made the SCAA (through twitter) aware about this post.

Hopefully we can get a lot of people twittering during that weekend.

Just another thought that I had that would be cool to implement (it's probably to late now, but might be considered in the future) would be to put a giant screen (projection or plasma or other) at the expo monitoring the SCAA hashtags (or keywords) so other people who are walking around at the expo can see what's going on even if they aren't using twitter.

Good idea. I'll write up a little blurb about it in my next newsletter, which will go out just before the show. Reaches about 7,500 -- will also email Matt and Mark about putting up something on bX and CG, if they don't read it here first.

FYI I am currently the SCAA Main Tweeter so we can work out the "style guide" for conference tweets here if you like. Even after reviewing the above, I'm not sure what the issues might be. I can say that setting up monitors, etc gets real pricey real fast in a trade show setting. But let's keep talking. I think it is a good idea to do something twitterish during conference.

I use Twitter (@mike_white) and am glad to see you guys organizing this for the WBC. I'd recommend just using #WBC, there's no conflict since the Baseball Classic is over, and all hashtags essentially do is aggregate the tweets when someone searches for it.

I won't be at the show, but twitter is @txcoffee (for the blog).

I hope to see some kind of live update for the WBC.

Jason,

I'll try as much as possible. I'm sure many of us will be updating as well.

I'm also wondering if the WBC will be broadcast live just like many Barista Championships around the world were this year.

It's always a question of time, people, and resources.

It's not always possible, and I can understand that. I'd rather be there. :(

Note SCAA is @SpecialtyCoffee.

@SCAA is the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.

#SCAA should be fine but note there are many organizations with the acronym SCAA so it might not be a clean aggregation. Generally, the same with #WBC, but during those four days we will likely dominate.

@SpecialtyCoffee is following a lot of coffee folk and will add quickly when followed so spread the word.

Is anyone else having problems retrieving #SCAA or SCAA on hashtags.org ?

I've been using http://monitter.com with keywords and it works great on real time.

Emily created a Twitter account for the WBC, you can follow live updates from the event at @WBC2009 in addition to the hashtag #WBC.

I think it's interesting to track technology for events like this. A couple years ago, live-blogging was all the rage. Then there was live video feed. This year, Twitter. If someone were to say, "Hey, I'm gonna be live-blogging the WBC Finals"...well, it already sounds archaic.

That raises the question I've been meaning to ask but have thus far refrained from: can people who twitter during such an event actually propagate useful, thoughtful and productive information in messages of 140 characters or less? Apart from real time updates on what's happening at a competition... a cool new product you think all your friends should see... or an update on where the evening's events/parties are going down... what kind of information and messages are you all going to be sharing?
