Great list. I had to read to #78 to find one my my biggest pet peeves:

78. Do not ask, “Are you still working on that?” Dining is not work — until questions like this are asked.

Many of these apply well to a coffee bar setting, thanks for the link.

And why no brass? Seems like a personal problem... I've heard some extremely soothing Wynton Marsalis during mealtimes.

Frankly, I think I'd be vaguely insulted if I were presented with this list as a server. Half of it ought to go without saying, the other half is either contradictory, repetitive, or too specific to be universally relevant.

#101. Do not make excessively long lists for your staff members. 20 or less will do.

As long as you present the information as, "You probably already know much of this information, but I'm just giving it to you again as reinforcement" I don't think the information is insulting at all.

I think a lot of manager-staff communication problems take place when one thinks the other "should" know something. Has the manager asked the person directly if they know that there is a problem, or if they can help? No? Then the problem is that the manager is not providing support to the staff, not that the person "should" know something.

I just hate the word "should". I''ll put that out there.

93. Do not play brass — no brassy Broadway songs, brass bands, marching bands, or big bands that feature brass, except a muted flugelhorn.
