Industry Report?

Hello everyone! I am trying to do some industry research but I am wondering if anyone has done some good, hard studying, reporting, and publishing of info regarding how our industry is doing? Back in the day I went to school for marketing and I built a business plan for a restaurant for a class project. My group used http://www.restaurant.org or some equivalent as a reference for industry trends, financial info, operating margins, etc. to base our model on. Is there such a report for the Specialty Coffee industry yet? I saw that the SCAA has one that might be a little out of date. Anything current out there? Thank you.

I asked the question a while ago on a different board and there weren't a lot of responses. That forced me to look else where. I looked in two different areas:

1. Publicly traded coffee companies usually have their annual review online so you could download it. Reading their review on the industry may help you. Also, all their financial information is there so you be able to do some financial ratios on their numbers.

2. Robert Morris and Associates publish their annual review of financial ratios. You should be able to find the book in the business reference section of the library. It's been a while since I looked to see what category coffee shops/roasters fell under, but that's one of the problems with RMA: one has to fit their business into one of the pre-determined categories.

In terms of independents, SCAA might post some information that they gather from their general membership. I have my doubts on how accurate the information is. I suspect that the majority of those folks over predict their revenues. That is a personal issue so I'll digress.

Mintel Consumer Reports publishes a report every year on coffee shops. It's caulk full of really, really good information, but the down side is it costs a fortune to buy. However, if you look it up, you might be able to get snipets of information that might be useful.

Those are the ideas I have....hopefully someone can fill in some details around others.

The SCAA does have some info but it's important to read between the lines and see if you can sort out the desired information geographically. The demographics and consumption trends they reference are - according to some - skewed towards a Pacific Northwest profile that is far different than what we see in other parts of the country.

In the real world - even within relatively limited regions -the demographics skew differently even in communities fairly close to one another. For example... what works for Gimme Coffee in Ithaca would not necessarily meet with similar success in the Syracuse market - and we're only 60 miles apart. Likewise - what works well in Manhattan or Brooklyn could easily end up falling flat just a few miles away in North Jersey - even in affluent communities. That's not to say that a quality driven espresso and coffee purveyor couldn't meet with success in that market but the way in which the hours, product offering etc. should be structured are likely to be far different than in NYC.

The SCAA has commissioned a new study of Operating Ratios that should deliver some solid new financial data. We also have access to the 2007 Mintel Coffeehouse Report, and if you have very specific questions we may be able to provide you with some answers. Alternatively, you can buy the report from us at a discount to the published price. We also use a variety of sources, including Mintel and the NCA Coffee Drinking Study combined with membership data and a range of public company annual reports to create a broad sheet on industry statistics. We should have the 2007 version available for you now (a little bit of polishing is still ongoing).

We have also committed as an association to increase our data gathering and analysis activities in order to bring added value to the membership. Please let me know if you have specific questions that we may be able to answer immediately.

Makes sense! It would be interesting to see some information regarding each region of the BGA. But, Ric, it seems that some of that may be coming in the future :P

Just dug up this discussion from a few years back. I wonder how consumption has changed since 2008? I wonder what percentage of coffee drinkers are drinking specialty coffee. I know that MANY more people in NYC are drinking better coffee since then.
