From an August 2008 NY Times article:
“It’s not just a business opportunity to me,” Mr. Sorenson said. “I want to hang out, live, eat and make coffee for people in Brooklyn and New York. I love it here.”

Apparently NYC is no longer the place to be...

From the March 2011 TimeOut Chicago article:
Sorenson declined to name the neighborhoods he's looking at, saying only that "they're all very attractive neighborhoods— neighborhoods that I'm going to want to live in, to make coffee [in]."

Hmmm... I suppose SF and LA will be equally appealing. My comments are not meant to be unkind. I actually like Stumptown's business model (most of it) and have enjoyed consistently good espresso (as well as horrid mocha's but that's the fault of the chocolate they use) at the Ace Hotel location in NYC (the only one of their shops I've been able to visit regularly.) That being said - I do find the hipsterism posing to be amusing.
