2008 Guatemala Cup Of Excellence

Postby andynewbom on Mon May 12, 2008 12:31 pm

Guatemala is a beautiful and hospitable country. So nice to be back here again.

So today was the final day of cupping the top ten coffees again. Some mind blowingly sweet and complex coffees. Can't wait to see which farms and regions take the awards this year.

many jurors scored the winner 95-97 points. It was dreamy and sexy and voluptuous. Damn fine coffee. :D

I find it interesting (especially with the large point spread) that the winning lot from Injerto was the only Pacamara varietal of the 19 in the finals, most of the rest being Caturra, Bourbon, Catuaí...

On a slightly related topic, does El Injerto produce a pure Pacas lot at all? It would be fascinating to cup their Pacamara, Maragogype, Pacas, Bourbon and Catuai on one table. Any hints on where to buy these before I go hunting around?

Cafe Imports is likely to have one or two of these (hoping they have even more than that). They currently have a 2007 Guatemalan COE among their COE green offerings - and they sell COE in less than full bag quantities.

I am not sure the El Injerto produce Pacas or not ,actually in El Salvador Pacas were planted on mid-high altitude and some producer will mix Pacas/Bourbon and sent to the CoE auction. The El Injerto they did have Maragogype(few), Bourbon, Catuai and Pacamara; bellow is two photos that we visited just before the 2008 Guatemala CoE:

$200 grand for an order of coffee!!!! All I can say is yikes. Big congrats to what appears now to be the second highest priced (true) specialty coffee on the planet. I didn't get to cup the Guats this year, but I'm guessing it was spectacular.

Re #2 and #3 - Coffee Bean International for Target - that's not Target as in the big box department store, is it?

Holy crap. Target. First one of the sponsors of the SCAA 2008 show in Minneapolis (host?) and now, purveyor and buyer of premium CoE lots.

I wonder who's gonna roast for them? I wonder how they're going to distribute (sell) it? I wonder what they got planned. It's exciting, as long as they don't ruin the coffee by having it poorly roasted and / or sitting getting stale for weeks or months.

CBI (Coffee Bean International) will roast the coffee, it is in good hands. I think target has done some pretty cool things to show their appreciation for specialty coffee in the past year. I've tried the Archer Farms (target's brand) it is precisely roasted, good quality and fresh (dated if I recall correctly.) They offer several single origins, the Yirgacheffe was really nice last year.

Congratulations to El Injerto and all the good coffees and farmers from Guatemala for a beautiful example of quality and dedication, as well to Duane and all the Specialty Coffee Companies that makes it happen. I feel proud as a farmer for the success of Guatemala this year, keep up guys, the auction events are becoming more and more important to integrate the industry from the seed to the cup. And no doubt Pacamara has a unique cup, but also you guys got the best price caturra in the world, Congratulations from my heart. It's an inspiration for any coffee farmer to improve and work in quality.

That Pacamara was by far the best coffee on the table as well as being very distinctive, congrats to Stumptown.

Wow Prince!

Coffee Bean International = Paul Thornton, who is unquestionably one of the people most integral to the formation of the Roasters Guild. They have a really solid crew, Chris Wade was in my Craft Roasting class at conference and is a well-spring of information.

Congrats to El Injerto and to Stumptown and Sweet Marias, who are compiling a killer line-up of coffees this year.

I know the name, though I'm not sure if I've ever met him - and his reputation is gold, so I'm guessing Target is in good hands. I didn't know he was CBI... good to know.

I said this was pretty exciting, and it is for me - I'm always excited when a mainstream, big name company (Target in this case) gets into the upper tiers of the specialty coffee world, because it means just one more victory over commodity coffee.

I'm really really curious how Target intends to market / use / sell this coffee. Anyone know?
