2009 Colombia Cup of Excellence

Postby )on on Thu Mar 12, 2009 3:41 pm

It has been an exciting week in Pereira, Colombia for CoE's first competition of 2009.

There are some updates and photos on our Facebook page and there will be more content there in days to come.

This is short notice, but we're going to try to broadcast a live feed of the cupping of the top ten scoring coffees which takes place tomorrow morning, Friday 13 March. The feed will start up around 8am local time (9am EST) and cupping should begin around 8.30.

If you've ever wanted to see inside the Cup of Excellence, this is your shot:

Thanks to all who checked in at the live feed. It was fun to share the event in this way although I regret not knowing and spreading the word sooner.

I've been asked if the recorded video will be available - I don't know. If it is and you want to watch it for the fun of it, I will be sure to let you know.

It's doubtful that live streaming will be available in many (or any) more of the producing countries, but we'll continue to look for creative ways to share the multi-dimensional excitement of CoE.

I wasn't able to catch the stream this morning, but I would most definitely be interested in the recording if/when it becomes available.

Killer idea.. and one I wish I were able to take advantage of.

2009 Colombia CoE auction results

Postby )on on Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:35 pm

Speaking of live coffee action, roasters around the world just finished bidding on Colombia's CoE coffees on the live online auction. Auction results can be seen here:

Colombia CoE auction results

Highlights include
- highest price ever paid for Colombia CoE: $21.00/lb
- an impressive average (especially in a down economy): $6.84/lb
- all lots will be vacuum-packaged
- coffee headed to 4 continents

We look forward to the coffeed community's commentary on what it all means, but, overall, we're pleased with the results - more money for producers who provide the world with quality coffee.

CBI does a good job bringing nice coffees to target. I've brought several of their seasonal offerings to our cupping table and they match the quality of the luminary brands.

This is very helpful to all of us in specialty because it brings something exceptional into the view of more mainstream consumers. There will be roughly 5000-6000 Colombia CoE #1 and #2 packages distributed into a market that very few of us reach.

CBI has roasters (both equipment and personnel) who can roast circles around many of the micro roasters on the market today. Give them a top coffee and it will be prepared to exacting standards. Their facility is something to behold and you won't find a more enthusiastic group of coffee people in their QC lab. Kudos to them.
