Using Oxyclean on Cloth Filters

Those of you that are doing this...What are your methods to ensure I am not thinking about Billy Mays the next time I use my Hario?

I haven't found a perfect way of cleaning these things yet. I'm almost resolved to using them once and then tossing them. Yeah, it's a dollar a filter, but compare a used one to a rinsed new one.

Have you done that as an A/B blind comparison with a few folks who have finely tuned palates? And if so... what was the result?

We found that filters left to air-dry have a tendency to pick up "unwholesome vapors" from the air. This translated to an infuriating wet cardboard taint in the cup.

We soak a bit more than a day's supply of filters in HOT water in a quart mason jar with three pinches of Oxyclean (of the free and clear persuasion) overnight. Then we rinse and wring several times and store the filters in the refrigerator in clean water.

From my experience using these filters at home, they last about three weeks if they're used twice daily. It's looking that the same holds true for commercial use.

My method is about seven weeks old, so I'd like to hear what others are doing as well.

I tend to use Cafiza to clean mine. I was curious if this was sensible but then I emailed Urnex and it turns out Cafiza was originally developed to clean cloth brewers.

Was a little squeemish about it to start with but I can't rationalise using it daily in my coffee machine but being terrified of it in a different application.

You can always blot it with the ShamWow..those little miracles will clean anything! And unlike Billy Mays, Vince needs the dough for his mounting legal bills.

i know they are comparatively expensive, but that's why i import the cona's - glass, water, coffee, nothing else - no cross-contamination.

They would require rinsing the filters to remove any paper taste, and the small hole in the middle worries me, but they would sure help Billy's bottom line!

I bought a Hario Nouveau in 2001, and it came with these filters. No worries about that small hole, as the filter assembly fit it fairly tightly. I promptly discontinued their use in favor of a glass rod. I believe at the time I found the paper filtered coffee to be much less flavorful.

That was eight years ago, and while things change I don't think I'd have the intellectual curiosity to track a box of these down for the sake of revisiting coffee science.

I believe I threw an unopened box of 100 of these away fairly recently. I will check the catacombs and report back.
