Happy Boxing Day (?)

Postby nick on Sat Dec 24, 2005 2:07 pm

Just thought I'd wish our friends in the Great White North, a very happy Boxing Day.

I have no idea what Boxing Day is, nor do I have any idea just when it is. So I thought I'd hopefully catch it before it comes and goes in the interest of a nice holiday greeting for our Canadian friends.

If I already missed it, then I meant Boxing Day 2006.

Box-box-box! Merry Boxing Day!!!

Boxing Day is the 26th - so you are still in time.

And thank you.

I think it comes from Britain where they would give money to the poor after Christmas and sort of tip extra, donate goods, spend money in the right places, etc. Nowadays, nobody has a damn clue and it's just an excuse to slash prices by about 80% and still make profit due to the "can of sardines effect". For every 1000 boxing day sales, there's 2 people who have an idea of what the holiday is.

I guess it's Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Nah - we just lie around in our country estates and snooze, perhaps under the influence of a trifle too much sherry.

Aaaah! Thanks for shedding light on this topic!!!

We've been spending all day today, celebrating Boxing Day by telling people, "Happy Boxing Day!!!" It's a great conversation-starter, and though I can't speak for the rest of our great nation... also known as "your neighbors to the south," I feel grateful that on this day, I have learned more about Canada.

Before that, I thought that Boxing Day was merely a day that Canadians made up to put on American calendars for the sole purpose of further alienating yourselves from the States, all the while creating this air of exoticism and mystery... sort of like "Memoirs of a Geisha," but for Canadians instead of Asians.

Alienate us from the US?!? Try isolate the US from us!!

Actually, boxing day marks the the first day of drinking moose milk between christmas and new year day as part of a prairie ritual.

I always thought that Boxing Day was when you box up the presents you don't like and return them while taking advantage of sales. This is why I generally don't leave the house on Boxing Day... I didn't know of any meaning, and I had no reason to brave the madness of shopping.
